Koh Lanta - Layana Resort & Spa

Now this is the vacation that we had been waiting for!  Ever since we discovered the "magical" place called the Layana Resort & Spa located in Koh Lanta, Krabi, Thiland back in 2010, we have been itching to return.  Boy, are we glad that we did!  Not only was the resort better than we remembered, but we were thrilled to see that nearly all of their amazing staff still worked there as well.
The Layana Resort and Spa is located on the west coast of Koh Lanta, on the white sand Phra-Ae Beach (Long Beach), positioned to "capture spectacular sunsets".  You can say that again!
For a brief geography lesson, Koh Lanta is situated in the southernmost district of Krabi Province.  It is an idyllic area where despite increasing popularity, you can still find peace and tranquillity. Koh Lanta consists of two islands; Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and doesn’t have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road (across two passenger car ferries) from the mainland, pass through the smaller island on the way to the resorts of Koh Lanta Yai. This island is approximately 22kms (13.67 miles) long and 6kms (3.72 miles) wide with more than 40kms (24.85 miles) of coastline. The island hills are cloaked in emerald forests, a haven to a variety of arboreal mammal species such as tree shrews, squirrels, macaque monkeys, and over 50 nesting and migrant bird species.
While we didn't see any tree shrews while we were there, we were fortunate to see some macaque monkeys playing in the water one evening during a sunset cruise around the island.  Speaking of animals, we learned that very near to the hotel there is a dog shelter (sadly, this is one of very few shelters in Thailand).  It is run completely by volunteers and each and every morning we would see someone from the shelter walking all of the dogs up and down the beach.  It truly is a miracle that we didn't come home with a new dog - or two!  (Next time that we go to visit we will be volunteering as well!)
In addition to participating in a bunch of the fun activities that the resort has to offer (snorkeling, swimming, getting massages, cooking classes, daily walks on the beach, etc.) we were incredibly fortunate to meet some wonderful people from all over the world who have also "discovered" this special place as well.
I truly could go on and on about all of the wonderful attributes of our vacation at the incredible Layana. Suffice it to say that we had a spectacular time and we count our blessing each and every day that we had the opportunity to go on this "dream" vacation.
